The Times: Entrepreneurs of tomorrow can find inspiration closer to home

It is not uncommon for local businesses to struggle in their search for able young workers, but help is at hand.

Greg Kirkman is all too familiar with skills shortages. The founder of Ensafe, an asbestos surveyor and consultancy based in Northampton that employs 85 people, has advertised for staff as far away as the northeast of England because the talent pool in his local area has been shrinking over the past decade.

It is a common problem for local businesses that have a lower profile than their larger counterparts, which have traditionally forged relationships with schools and colleges, says Claudia Harris, chief executive of the Careers & Enterprise Company, which helps to prepare young people for the world of work.
