Apply now to join Trowbridge Fire Cadets

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for young people to join their next Fire Cadets programme in Trowbridge, starting in September 2018.

The aim of Fire Cadets is to support the development of young people by providing a positive role model and giving them opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities.

The Service is keen to recruit young people between the ages of 13 and 18 to take part in this rewarding training scheme, which will not only be fun and enjoyable but will also give the Cadets the chance to learn new personal and social skills, and also obtain a BTEC qualification.

Emily, aged 15, is one of this year’s Cadets and says:

The programme is helping me gain more confidence in talking to people and presenting in front of them, while the practical work is improving my ability to work both with others and also individually. Sometimes we are given roles for the work we do, sometimes we choose the roles ourselves – it’s a great experience and I love it!

The programme, linked to the National Fire Cadet model, is delivered by firefighters and volunteers and lasts for 38 weeks within the academic year of 2018/19. Drills will take place every Wednesday evening at Trowbridge fire station and will involve practical and theory elements along with community-based social action projects.

The course is designed to be fun, but it also challenges and develops the participants by getting them to:

  • Work co-operatively within a team environment
  • Gain self-esteem and self-confidence and improve communication skills
  • Adopt a new set of personal values
  • Understand the importance of safety issues and the consequences of anti-social behaviour
  • See the advantages of improving their learning and performance

The participants benefit in a number of areas, including: team building skills, gaining a portfolio of achievements and BTEC accreditation, increased fire and safety awareness, development of practical skills, greater community awareness, and increased levels of fitness.

It is expected that the programme will gain a lot of interest and therefore there will be an application and interview process.

If you are interested, please register an expression of interest via email to Christine Sharma (christine.sharma@dwfire.org.uk) by Friday 27 April and an application form will be sent to you. The deadline for returning completed application forms is Friday 11 May.
