Apprenticeship Case Study – Level 3 Business Administration & Entry Level Accountancy

Adam Valovec, 25, has successfully completed his Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship at SMARTech energy and is now undertaking study for Entry Level AAT. SMARTech energy based in Corsham, are leaders in energy management and reduction for commercial businesses and organisations in the South West.

Adam can you tell us about your journey so far regarding apprenticeships?

I completed a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship earlier this year, I am now undertaking the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) at Entry level apprenticeship which will take 1 year to complete – so I hope that will be finished by June 2019. I attend Trowbridge College 1 day a week which I enjoy as I have a day away from the office to concentrate on my studies. I feel I have learnt more through an apprenticeship over a shorter period than at University, because what I am learning is relevant to the work place and I am gaining a qualification whilst I work.

Did you always know you wanted to take the apprenticeship route?

No I didn’t, I studied for my A-Levels in Business, Geography and Geology and then went to University to study Business & IT, but I left after the first year because I felt the course wasn’t for me. I came to SMARTech energy as an Admin Assistant and the chance to do an apprenticeship arose through Stuart the Managing Director. In terms of the AAT I made the team aware of my interest in the area, so I was offered more training to specialise.

Can you tell us about your day to day role? What can those looking at apprenticeships expect?

I currently do admin tasks for the company and general book keeping which then gets checked by the accountant. I also have some HR related tasks, such as keeping check on annual leave and sickness. Therefore, there is variety in my role and allows me to develop new skills. In the future I hope to continue my studies and become a chartered accountant.
