What’s this course about? 

This course will help you to develop your English skills.  It will enable you to improve your reading and writing and help you gain confidence in speaking, too.  The course is intended to help you enjoy English – we will play some games and even have a go at poetry! 

Course format 

This is a face to face course where you’ll learn together and take part in practical group activities, all in a relaxed and friendly environment. 

 What will I learn? 

• How to skim and scan when reading 

• How to develop strategies to help your spelling 

• How to make your writing interesting 

• How to improve your grammar 

• How to write a simple poem using a ‘recipe’ 

• How to speak to a small group with confidence 

 How long is the course? 

This is run as 2-hour sessions over 5 weeks, with some activities to do at home to help you practise your skills 

How will I be assessed? 

You will be required to complete some paperwork during this course.  This will record and support your learning journey and successes.

Courses are no cost to learners who meet the eligibility criteria:

Learners must be aged 19+ on 31 August 2024 to learn with Family and Community Learning this academic year.  Learners must also have a Wiltshire postcode and either have lived in the UK/EU for three years or meet certain residency requirements (for example, certain types of immigration status are exempt from the three-year residency rule).  Learners must also be able to tick one of the following criteria:

• On a lower income, earning less than £25,000 a year.
• In receipt of benefits (other than child benefit).
• Care leaver, refugee, foster carer, carer, military family / ex-armed forces personnel, learning difficulty or disability, or have school-aged children who receive free school meals.
• Not in work and looking to go into work, now or in the future.
