The purpose of this course is to enable learners to successfully support their children with emotionally based school avoidance. They will gain a greater understanding of the impact of poor attendance on learner outcomes and the legal implications involved. Learners will understand more about the reasons for school avoidance as well as the strategies that can be used when children reach crisis-point. The session will also include information about the reasonable adjustments that schools can make to support children with attendance.
OVERALL COURSE AIMS:
- Discuss attendance data and the impact on school outcomes for children and the legal implications for parents/carers.
- Develop a greater understanding of emotional school avoidance.
- Share the common reasons for emotional school avoidance.
- Share strategies to use when a child is at crisis point.
- Understand the reasonable adjustments that can be made by schools to support your child.
- Signpost learners to further support if needed.
By the end of this course, learners will be able to (at the appropriate level):
- Understand attendance data and the impact attendance has on learner outcomes.
- Show greater awareness of legal implications for poor school attendance.
- List the common reasons for school avoidance and discuss those that apply to their child.
- Develop a greater understanding of emotional school avoidance and the strategies to use when their child is at crisis point.
- Understand the reasonable adjustments that can be made by schools to support your child
Entry Requirements:
Family and Community Learning courses are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency. Courses are no cost to learners if they are aged 19+, have a Wiltshire postcode, and have been a resident in UK/EU for 3+years (or have certain immigration status) and if you can tick any of these criteria:
- have less than 5 GCSEs grades A-C / 9-4
- in receipt of benefits (other than child benefit)
- are a military family
- are a family with children who need additional support
- are unemployed and looking for work.
