EES 15: Number of apprenticeship starts

Starts for 2017/18 show a drop of 740 apprenticeship starts to 5,720, a drop of 11.5% since 16/17. This was the first full year with the Apprenticeship levy which was introduced in April 2017, and nationally there was a drop of 24.1% on apprenticeship starts. Wiltshire had 19.2 starts per 1000 population aged 16-64 years old which is the second highest compared to Wiltshire’s statistical neighbours, with an average of 11.7, and well above the national average of 10.8 (Dorset is highest at 20.4). EES 43: Intermediate apprenticeship success rate

Higher

EES 46: Number of higher apprenticeship starts

2017/18 shows a continued increase in Higher Apprenticeship starts to 450. This is an increase of 66.7% on the previous year. This data was sourced from the FE: Data Library. Data reported for 2018/19 Q3 August-April shows Wiltshire had 470 starts for this period; this is 20 more than the 2016/17 total amount; these continued large increases are likely to be contributed to the introduction of the Levy and businesses using it to upskill their staff with higher level qualifications.

EES 47: Higher apprenticeship success rate

Of the 130 individuals who were due to finish a higher Apprenticeship in 2017/18, 72% completed theirs. Wiltshire had a significant increase on the previous year and the county’s success rate remains above the average rate nationally (63.6%). Supported Internships

EES 14: Number of Supported Internship starts for 16 – 24 year olds

Wiltshire Council’s Supported Internships Programme commenced in September 2014. For 2018/19 there are 14 Supported Internship starts: 10 at Wiltshire College and less than 5 are at Swindon College. This is lower than usual this year, with the maximum of 24 places available for Wiltshire residents, as Fairfield College are currently transitioning into a larger provision and working on their pathway to employment so have a reduced offer this year and the provision for Swindon is based solely on Wiltshire residents, so this fluctuates each year. In 2017/18 Wiltshire Supported Internships had 53% success rate of interns moving into paid employment, this is considerably higher than the last reported average from the DfE of 36%.
