This course has been designed to help learners, whose mother tongue is not English, to settle into the life in the UK. Learners will be taught a variety of topics in accordance with their individual learning journeys. The aim is to teach learners how to communicate effectively in English covering all three elements (SLC, Reading and writing).  

 OVERALL COURSE AIMS: 

  • Show an understanding of simple words and phrases used in everyday conversational and familiar contexts. 
  • Ask simple questions and respond appropriately.  
  • Understand face to face speech/words in spoken British English. 
  • Write simple sentences using learned vocabulary.  
  • Recognise and find important information in life-skill materials related to their needs. 
  • Use appropriate body language to clarify and complement their spoken language. 

OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVES:  

  • Develop my understanding of the English alphabet so I can recognise words.  
  • Develop my knowledge on how to how to greet and respond appropriately. 
  • Develop knowledge of the days of the week and the months of the year so that I can organise my time.  
  • To develop knowledge of action verbs in speech and text so that I can communicate efficiently.    
  • Develop knowledge on how to form questions and answers so that I can have simple conversation.  
  • To develop understanding of nouns so that I learn how to construct a sentence and build on my grammar. 
  • Develop knowledge of adjectives so I can make my writing more interesting.  
  • To develop my knowledge of items found in a café so that I can order food and drink.  
  • To describe and understand vocabulary used on a train ticket and timetable so that I can travel successfully.   
  • Develop knowledge of adverbs so I can talk about how, when and where something can happen. 

Entry Requirements:

Family and Community Learning courses are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency. Courses are no cost to learners if they are aged 19+, have a Wiltshire postcode, and have been a resident in UK/EU for 3+years (or have certain immigration status) and if you can tick any of these criteria:

  • have less than 5 GCSEs grades A-C / 9-4
  • in receipt of benefits (other than child benefit)
  • are a military family
  • are a family with children who need additional support
  • are unemployed and looking for work.
