Supporting my Teen to Understand their Skills

What’s this course about?   

This course looks at how parents and carers can support teen to recognise their own worth. We explore transferable skills, personal qualities and how to talk to teens about them.  We look at what resilience is and how to develop it alongside recognising ways to communicate effectively in order to help our teens to use their understanding of their skills and qualities to plan for the future. 

Course format:   

This is an online course where you’ll learn together and take part in discussion and tutor led activities, all in a relaxed and friendly environment.   

Who will benefit from attending?  

This course is parents who want to be able to support their teens to identify their skills in order to find their value and plan ahead. 

What will I learn?   

Learners will explore how to identify their teens’ personal qualities, skills and interests and how to communicate this with them.  They will learn about resilience, how to build it and why it is important. They will recognise that we all have different skills, qualities and interests and how to recognise value of individuals 

How long is the course?   

This is run as a single 2-hour session, with some activities to do at home to help you practise your skills.   

Will I be assessed?   

You will be required to complete some paperwork during this course. This will record and support your learning journey and successes.   

Eligibility:

Courses are no cost to learners who meet our eligibility criteria. Learners must be aged 19+ on 31 August of the academic year, have a Wiltshire postcode, and meet certain residency requirements.

They must also be able to tick one of the following criteria:

  • On a lower income, earning less than £25,750 a year.
  • In receipt of benefits (other than child benefit).
  • Care leaver, refugee, foster carer, carer, military family / ex-armed forces personnel, have a learning difficulty or disability, have school-aged children who receive means-tested free school meals.
  • Not in work and looking to go into work, now or in the future.
