
What’s this course about?
This course will help you to consider how important your own well-being in when supporting your children. We will consider the challenges of the individual needs that children have, alongside supporting siblings of children with challenging behaviour. The sessions will identify professionals that can support families alongside their specific roles and skills.
Course format:
Who will benefit from attending?
This course is for parents who feel that they need some support with supporting their child’s individual needs.
What will I learn?
- About the importance of parent well-being
- Strategies to support parent well-being
- The importance of positive relationships and connections with children
- About the Five to Thrive approach and children’s brain development
- Strategies to support sibling of children with additional needs
- About communication: miscommunication, positive communication and active listening
- Which professionals can support us with specific needs
- How to build positive relationships with schools and other professionals
How long is the course?
This is run as 2-hour sessions over 3 weeks, with some activities to do at home to help you practise your skills.
Will I be assessed?
You will be required to complete some paperwork during this course in the form of surveys and journal entries.
Courses are no cost to learners who meet the eligibility criteria:
Learners must be aged 19+ on 31 August 2024 to learn with Family and Community Learning this academic year. Learners must also have a Wiltshire postcode and either have lived in the UK/EU for three years or meet certain residency requirements (for example, certain types of immigration status are exempt from the three-year residency rule). Learners must also be able to tick one of the following criteria:
- On a lower income, earning less than £25,000 a year.
- In receipt of benefits (other than child benefit).
- Care leaver, refugee, foster carer, carer, military family / ex-armed forces personnel, learning difficulty or disability, or have school-aged children who receive free school meals.
- Not in work and looking to go into work, now or in the future.
