What’s this course about?   

The purpose of this course is to learn about Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) and the ways to support children in attending school at the early stages of school avoidance. 

Course format:   

This is an online course where you’ll learn together with other parents of children at the early stages of school avoidance.  

Who will benefit from attending?  

This course is for parents and carers of children who are at the early stages of school avoidance and want to support their child/children in developing a positive relationship with school and promote school attendance.  

What will I learn?   

  • The impact that poor school attendance can have on children and families. 
  • Explore Emotionally Based School Avoidance, including the signs and cycle that can occur. 
  • Develop strategies to support children experiencing EBSA. 
  • Identify different professionals who can offer further support. 

How long is the course?   

This is run as a single 2-hour session, with some reflection tasks to complete at the end.  

Will I be assessed?   

You will be required to complete some paperwork during this course. This will record and support your learning journey and successes.

Courses are no cost to learners who meet the eligibility criteria:

Learners must be aged 19+ on 31 August 2024 to learn with Family and Community Learning this academic year.  Learners must also have a Wiltshire postcode and either have lived in the UK/EU for three years or meet certain residency requirements (for example, certain types of immigration status are exempt from the three-year residency rule).  Learners must also be able to tick one of the following criteria:

  • On a lower income, earning less than £25,000 a year.
  • In receipt of benefits (other than child benefit).
  • Care leaver, refugee, foster carer, carer, military family / ex-armed forces personnel, learning difficulty or disability, or have school-aged children who receive free school meals.
  • Not in work and looking to go into work, now or in the future.
