Young people invited to join online event to help them decide their future path

Young people considering next steps for their future careers are being invited to an online event to discuss apprenticeships, education and work.

The Careers Hub will be hosting a Learn Live Event for students and parents with interactive chat from all stakeholders involved on 26 May.

The broadcast is an hour long and will run on a loop from 11am to 2pm, and again from 5pm to 7pm.

The free virtual post 16 and post 18 options event is for young people (aged 14+). A range of apprenticeships and other work-based training opportunities as well as further and higher education providers will be featured, alongside stakeholders who can support their choices.

This will be an interactive event, giving young people the chance to ask questions directly to colleges, universities, training providers, employers and speakers to help them make future career choices.

The event will run on an hour loop so students can watch it in different lessons if they are not able to get them altogether, alternatively there will also be a twilight session for parents 5-7pm.

Sections covered are:
• College courses and local training opportunities
• Employers who offer apprenticeships*
• Higher Education – Apprenticeships and Universities
• Traineeships
• Support and advice to support various opportunities
• Employability Skills and Wellbeing Tips

Cllr Laura Mayes, Deputy Leader with responsibility for Education and Skills at Wiltshire Council said: “Young people have faced real challenges because of COVID-19 and there will be many who are leaving school or working on GCSEs or A levels unsure of what they want to do next. These short sessions will be a chance to hear what’s on offer and ask questions in an informal way online to help young people with these important decisions. I hope we’ll have lots of people joining in and getting a real benefit from this.”

Paddy Bradly, Swindon and Wiltshire CEO, said of the plans “The Swindon & Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership is delighted that The Careers Hub will be hosting the live event for students and parents. It is so important to break down the barriers to skilled jobs for young people from our communities.”

Mike Holliday, Manager from Gloucestershire & Wiltshire Partnership & ASK says they are “very much looking forward to participating in this event. The pandemic has muddied the waters for young people and their future prospects and this will be a great way to showcase what their options are and that there are plenty of positive opportunities available to them.”
