Course aims: Social action skills will enable people to grow as active citizens who are able to play their part and know how to become involved in public life. This course is designed to provide adults with the opportunity to develop interpersonal, teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills. It will embed British values, Prevent, Equality and Diversity, literacy and numeracy skills with a strong focus around safety. Learners will learn about the benefits of volunteering where they will gain a sense of purpose, a sense of community and improve their self-esteem. This course will build on skills around caring for the community and the environment, growing your own and how volunteering or employment can develop into a vocation. The course will be split into class learning and outdoor activities where we will work in the grounds of venues. Learners will develop skills and knowledge around gardening, growing and nurturing plants, flowers, vegetables and trees, and furthermore, cooking skills, recipes and healthy eating.

OVERALL COURSE AIMS: · To encourage learners to develop a good understanding of the benefits of volunteering. · To provide opportunities for learners to develop their English and maths skills. · To support learners to develop environmental awareness into their lives. · To embed skills for sustainability – the skills needed to support sustainable development. · To provide opportunities for career advancement in a sustainable economy. · To support and positively influence the factors that impact social mobility. · To show learners the progression opportunities available for them.

Entry Requirements:

Family and Community Learning courses are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency. Courses are no cost to learners if they are aged 19+, have a Wiltshire postcode, and have been a resident in UK/EU for 3+years (or have certain immigration status) and if you can tick any of these criteria:

  • have less than 5 GCSEs grades A-C / 9-4
  • in receipt of benefits (other than child benefit)
  • are a military family
  • are a family with children who need additional support
  • are unemployed and looking for work.
