What is this course about?

New to English is a welcoming course designed for adults who are beginning to learn English. It supports learners to develop confidence and communication skills for everyday life in the UK.

The course is suitable for learners with little or no previous experience of English. Through practical activities and supportive teaching, you will learn useful words, phrases and sentences that can be used in everyday situations.

You will learn in a friendly group environment, with opportunities to practise speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course also introduces aspects of British culture and everyday life in the UK.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults who are new to learning English, including learners with little or no previous experience of the language.

What will I learn?

During the course, you will:

  • Understand and use simple English for everyday communication

  • Build simple and compound sentences using basic grammar
  • Develop vocabulary for shopping, travel, health, family, money and work
  • Learn about British culture and everyday life in the UK
  • Receive Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance to support your next steps

Course Format

This is a face-to-face course delivered in a relaxed and supportive environment.

The course consists of ten sessions, each lasting two hours. Sessions include tutor-led activities, group learning and independent tasks. There will also be some home learning activities to help you practise your skills between sessions.

What Support Will I Receive?

You will be supported throughout the course by an experienced tutor. Sessions are designed to be friendly, inclusive and suitable for learners who are new to English.

You will have opportunities to ask questions, practise your skills and learn at a pace that supports your progress.
