Apprenticeship Case Study – Level 3 Electrical

Sam Walker, 23, is a Level 3 Electrical Apprentice entering his 3rd year, he is due to complete his course in June 2019. SMARTech energy based in Corsham, are leaders in energy management and reduction for commercial businesses and organisations in the South West.

Sam tell us about your educational and career history?

After completing my GCSE’s, I went to College to do a Level 3 Public Service course as my ambition was to work in the fire service. I found myself working in an electrical company involving installing mirror lights and speaker systems. I started to look for apprenticeship opportunities and found this role at SMARTech Energy.

What does this role involve and what aspects do you find interesting?

This role can really vary from working with large manufacturing businesses to local businesses with small offices. I assist with installation, processes to help reduce energy usage, air cooling systems to smaller jobs like lighting. I am happy at SMARTech energy as I am learning the basics, but I am being given responsibility and taught how to handle different jobs and therefore expanding my skills.

What advice would you give to others considering an apprenticeship?

Go for it, I think apprenticeships are the way forward, if you are a visual learner like me. I feel it is much better than doing 3 years of studying alone as there can be a gap in knowledge. I am getting on the job experiences.
