Family & Community Learning – Learner Case Study

Hannah, full time Mum of 4, has been working with Family and Community Learning (F&CL) since November 2017, she has most recently been awarded a Festival of Learning 2020 award for her determination and dedication to learning and went on to receive the Patrons Award from HRH The Princess Royal in November 2021.

Can you tell us Hannah why you choose to join the Family and Community Learning courses?

I enrolled in confidence and new direction course as I had a lack of confidence in learning through School and I needed a boost. I needed to look at where I wanted to go, it was a good starting point to see where I wanted to go. Over time it clicked and by January 2019 (just over a year later) I had my functional skills in Maths and English. I also did other courses to support my own children’s learning that was another reason I joined the courses.

Laura (Tutor) how have you seen Hannah grow?

I have seen Hannah come full circle as she now comes along to courses to support others in her voluntary role as one of our governors; she asks important questions and represents our learners to help us to improve our service. She has always helped others. On the English course she set up a homework club to support others; and before classes, she met up with learners who felt isolated or nervous to help them have the confidence to come to a course. Hannah’s attitude to learning is an inspiration!

How have the courses and experiences with F&CL changed your life Hannah?

I think it is amazing what you can achieve in a short amount of time, it has given me a lot of confidence and understanding how I can move forward. I am able to advocate well for my children and understand their Schooling needs. It’s not only my life it has affected, but it also has a knock on effect, allowing me to help others including Childrens friends and family members.
