Enhance Your English – Reading Well

What’s this course about?   

Our Enhance Your English (EYE) courses will help you to develop the English skills you need for further study, work or volunteering.  These courses are ideal preparation if you are thinking of studying Functional Skills English or GCSE English or want to brush up your English skills ready for work or study.  Your tutor will help you to work on your spelling, punctuation, grammar, writing, reading and communication skills in an informal and supportive online class, and there will be learning activities to complete online too.    

In EYE – Reading Well, you will explore ways to develop your confidence with reading, including identifying the features of reading materials that will support your wellbeing. 

Course format:   

This is an online course where you’ll learn together and take part in practical group activities, all in a relaxed and friendly environment.   

Who will benefit from attending?  

This course will prepare learners for their next steps in further study (including Functional Skills English).    

What will I learn?   

  • How to research with the library in order to find suitable reading materials that support your interests. 
  • How reading can support wellbeing, and ways to develop to your confidence with reading at home, study and work. 
  • How to identify the features of different types of reading materials, and identify those you enjoy and that will support your wellbeing.  

How long is the course?   

This is run as a single 2-hour session, with some activities to do at home to help you practise your skills.   

Will I be assessed?   

You will be required to complete some paperwork during this course. This will record and support your learning journey and successes.   

Entry Requirements:   

FaCL online courses are funded by the education and skills funding agency. Courses are no cost to learners if they are 19+ and have been a resident in UK/EU for 3+years.  

and if you can tick any of these criteria:  

  • have less than 5 GCSEs grades a-c  
  • in receipt of benefits   
  • are a service family  
  • are a family with SEN children  
  • are unemployed
